Crafting Nostalgic Halloween Boo Bucket Earrings with the xTool S1 Laser Cutter
Reviving a Halloween Tradition
For many of us, Halloween isn’t complete without a touch of nostalgia. Growing up, one of the most cherished traditions was getting a McDonald’s Boo Bucket during spooky season. This year, I decided to capture that nostalgic magic by making my own Boo Bucket earrings out of wood, using the xTool S1 laser cutting machine. Not only did it bring back childhood memories, but it also allowed me to create a fun and wearable piece of Halloween jewelry. These handmade earrings are a great personal accessory or gift for Halloween lovers!
The Versatility of the xTool S1 Laser Cutter
The xTool S1 laser cutter is an incredibly versatile tool for crafting. From creating intricate designs to personalizing materials, the possibilities are virtually endless. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crafter, the machine is easy to use, and once you start, the only challenge is deciding what to make next! If you’re curious about how this machine operates or want to explore its features, you can check out my complete review of the xTool S1. Now, let’s dive into the process of making these fun Boo Bucket earrings!
Getting Started: Preparing Your Materials
To begin the project, you’ll need to use a 3mm basswood sheet. Place the basswood into the xTool S1 machine and manually align the laser box so that the red «+» sign sits on the material. The alignment doesn’t need to be perfectly centered, which makes setup quick and easy.
In the xTool Creative Space (XCS) software, you’ll see a section called «Distance (mm)» on the right side of the screen. Click the target icon to allow the machine to automatically measure the thickness of your material, ensuring accurate cutting.
Uploading and Adjusting Your Design
Next, upload the Halloween Boo Bucket earring design into the xTool Creative Space. When working with SVG files, it’s essential to set the proper functions for each part of the design. In this project, red sections should be designated for cutting, while purple sections are set for engraving. Make sure you also adjust the material setting to 3mm basswood, matching the sheet you’ve loaded into the machine.
Once everything is set up, check that all elements of the earring design fit within the designated area on the software screen. After confirming that, click the green «Process» button at the bottom right to start the laser cutting process.
Finishing Touches: Cleaning and Painting
After the machine finishes cutting the earring pieces, carefully remove them. I recommend cleaning off any residual soot around the edges of the wood using a Magic Eraser or baby wipes. This will help keep your hands and workspace clean while preparing the earrings for painting.
The next step is to cover the wooden pieces with a thin layer of black acrylic paint or stain. I used Unicorn Spit for this, as it effectively darkens the engraved areas in just one coat. The paint not only adds depth to the engraving but also provides a nice base color for additional decoration. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on.
Adding Color to Your Boo Buckets
Now comes the fun part: adding color! Using acrylic paint markers or brushes, bring the Boo Buckets to life. For a vibrant pumpkin, I suggest using bright orange, while a green apple shade works well for the witch, and white is perfect for the ghost. Depending on the color, you may need to apply multiple coats for an even finish. Lighter shades like orange and white generally require more layers than darker ones, so be patient and allow each coat to dry thoroughly before adding the next.
Sealing the Earrings with UV Resin
Once the painting is complete, it’s time to give the earrings a polished, finished look. Apply a dome of UV resin over the top surface of the earrings. Using a toothpick, carefully spread the resin to cover the entire surface, making sure to reach the edges. If any air bubbles form, you can pop them using alcohol before curing the resin under a UV light. For a durable finish, I recommend also covering the back of the earrings with resin.
Assembling the Earrings
Finally, it’s time to assemble your earrings! For the Boo Bucket stud earrings, turn the pieces over and attach an earring post to the center of each using strong adhesive. Once the posts are in place, cover the entire back with UV resin to ensure a secure hold. Cure the resin under the UV light one last time, and your earrings are ready to wear.
A Nostalgic Halloween Accessory
These Boo Bucket earrings might be small, but they make a big statement! Their nostalgic design is sure to be a hit during the Halloween season, and they are so fun to wear. Whether you’re gifting them to a friend or keeping them for yourself, these earrings will add a playful touch to any spooky outfit. Plus, with the xTool S1 laser cutting machine, creating personalized jewelry has never been easier. Now you can celebrate Halloween in style, with a nod to the past and a crafty touch.
