Flew The Coop: A Captivating Love Story in Fringe Theatre

A Night to Remember

This week, I had the pleasure of experiencing one of the most remarkable fringe theatre productions currently gracing the London stage: Flew The Coop. This heartwarming show, inspired by true events from the 1940s, offers a captivating glimpse into a love story that defies the odds. I must confess, before this performance, I had never encountered the names Rosa Rauchbach and Horace Greasley. However, within just an hour, their extraordinary narrative unfolded before me, compelling me to share their story with you.

A Charming Venue

I was fortunate to attend a Wednesday night performance at the New Diorama Theatre, an intimate venue just a two-minute stroll from Warren Street tube station. Known for showcasing outstanding productions from emerging theatre companies, the New Diorama proved to be the perfect setting for this gripping tale. It’s been three years since my last theatre outing, and as a former drama student, I felt a pang of regret for not immersing myself in the world of live performances more often.

The Heart of the Story

At the core of Flew The Coop is the incredible true story of Rosa Rauchbach, a Silesian translator who, along with her family, had to conceal her Jewish identity to survive the horrors of World War II. Her counterpart, Horace Greasley, was a British prisoner of war who managed to escape his captors over 200 times, all in the name of love. Their romance blossoms amid chaos, prompting them to make pivotal decisions about their future as the war draws to a close.

Pacing and Precision

What struck me most about the performance was its brisk pace, interwoven with cleverly timed comedic elements that kept the audience engaged throughout. The cast displayed a remarkable chemistry, ensuring that I remained absorbed in the unfolding drama. The creative use of minimal props was particularly impressive—ordinary objects like brooms transformed into guns and tin cans into speakers, showcasing the ingenuity of the production.

Meet the Creators

Flew The Coop is the brainchild of The Lost Watch Theatre Company, founded in 2013. The company has gained a reputation for crafting unique and thought-provoking narratives that push the boundaries of traditional theatre. Written by the talented leading actress, Rianna Dearden, the play features the outstanding performances of Olivia Hirst and Agnes Wild, both of whom contributed significantly to the show’s emotional depth and humor.

As a company, The Lost Watch Theatre has been recognized with multiple awards for their authentic storytelling, and Flew The Coop marks their fourth production. Their ability to blend various styles and content makes each performance a fresh experience, and this one is no exception.

A Must-See Experience

If you’re in London and seeking an exceptional theatre experience without breaking the bank, I wholeheartedly recommend Flew The Coop. With its engaging story, strong performances, and clever staging, this production is bound to resonate with a wide audience. However, act quickly—tickets are flying off the shelves, and the show will conclude its run on March 4th. Don’t miss your chance to witness this extraordinary tale of love and resilience!
